J. Alexander - Fine Artist

J. Alexander (b.2003, Ascot) lives and works in Bath, studying at Bath School of Art, Film and Media.

My art practice intends to merge the boundaries of the real and the surreal through the exploration of magical realism and immersive worldbuilding. My work is largely inspired by the intricate biological and botanical forms of our natural world and I in turn see my work as an ode to nature and the magical realism that surrounds us all. Through my practice I aim to explore the infinite possibilities and tangents of the mind’s eye, touching on the juxtaposing themes of life and mortality, growth and decay, the miniature and the massive. To me, both my practice and processes act as a form of escapism, fabricating realities for myself and the viewer to become immersed within, whilst situating these worlds within our real-world issues of climate change, habitat loss and mass pollution. Utilising a plethora of mixed media processes, I now primarily work in sculpture, aided through the addition of photography and experimental film works – helping to create a sense of the worlds my works journey through on both a microscopic and macrocosmic level. I feel that I hold a natural affinity towards simple repetitive processes, building up to the final work as a whole, be it the pointillism in my early acrylic paintings through to the making of Genesis II, I find the comforting monotony of these processes extremely grounding and a fundamental foundation of my art practice, intuitively ‘learning through making’, which allows me to appreciate each natural formation I depict on a much deeper level. I meticulously hand-craft each element of my work, intending for this process to allude to the idea of the man-made, both as a physical work and as a playful metaphor as to the consequences of anthropogenic environmental impact.
